Description: NIPASRA 7586, an Act Providing for the Establishment and Management of National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS), was enacted by congress in 1992 to respond to the profound impact of human activities on all components of the natural environment particularly the effect of increasing population, resource exploitation and industrial advancement and recognizing the critical importance of maintaining the natural biological diversities of the environment notably on areas with biologically unique features. The NIPAS is the national system of classification and administration of all designated protected areas to maintain essential ecological processes and life-support systems, to preserve genetic diversity, to ensure sustainable use of resources found therein, and to maintain their natural conditions to the greatest extent possible. Briefly stated, the NIPAS Act allows the government to identify and segregate defined areas of land and/or water, and classify them as protected areas for various purposes. The Philippines has a total of 248 Protected Areas covering 7.97M hectares. Protected area refers to identified portions of land and/or water set aside by reason of their unique physical and biological diversity and protected against destructive human exploitation.
